She'd had to bribe Bobbi to take her off the ship with a whispered insistence that she is not up to no good, she doesn't need protecting, and if she really must know, she's seeing a S.H.I.E.L.D. approved entity, given that Sam had helped immensely with everything that had happened when HYDRA had surfaced. Bobbi had given her a strange look, but had taken her where she'd needed to be, which is where Simmons is currently waiting on the sidewalk, holding her clutch in her hands a touch too tightly (maybe because she's got an icer in there and she's not sure she wants the host to find out when he takes it away).

She's dressed casually for this, a black shirt and jeans, but she can't help but feel nervous for some reason she can't exactly put her finger on, but she knows that it's making her slightly anxious, and she hardly does well when anxious. She tries to tell herself that it will all be perfectly fine. It's just dinner and a drink or two. There's nothing wrong with that, now is there? Besides, it's DC and there are agents all over.

And she slightly suspects that Bobbi isn't going to leave her alone tonight until she's sure Simmons will be okay.

The sheer desolation of the place is the first thing that's set Simmons to unrest.

The second is the sheer number of warnings surroundings this little town that seems boarded up to oblivion, all of them telling her to get away, go home, that there are dead people here, and they're going to eat her. Realistically, Simmons is absolutely aware that zombies can't exist because, quite simply, it's physiologically impossible. Then again, she's been staying in a magical space hotel with magic doors that take her anywhere she'd like to go, so maybe she shouldn't open her mouth and try and refute the whole zombie thing too loudly.

She'd thought she'd heard someone come in behind her, too. The trouble is that Simmons really, really doesn't want to open her mouth in case she attracts unwanted attention and so she begins a very slow circle as she casts her eye to all vantage points and tries to find the nearest door to get her out of here.

Why can't she be Hermione? Honestly, a quick alohomora would not go amiss right now. Not to mention it would be so much easier if she could simply apparate and...none of this is helping. She closes her eyes for the briefest of moments (not wanting to let her guard down too much) and she wishes that Agent Coulson or May were here, or even Agent Triplett. She'd really like to know that she's not going to die here, especially not after everything that she's survived.

The ache doesn't really start until the next day.

The adrenaline has been doing such a good job of keeping her steady and stable that she doesn't feel the effects of the water rushing in and knocking her out, she doesn't feel the strain in her muscles from pulling Fitz up ninety feet of water, and she doesn't feel the fracture in her heart that's threatening to pull her apart. Despite her body demanding painkillers, she finds what she wants, most of all, a daffodil as bright as she can find.

She brings it back to Fitz's bedside, setting it in a small vase before she drags her chair closer to his sleeping side, reaching her fingers forward to twine her fingers with his. It keeps them from shaking, but it also keeps her remembering what he'd done for her and how she can't let him go (can't let his words go). So instead, she brings a get well flower because he's out of the compression chamber finally and the med-team has cleared him. She's been frantic and worried, carefully trying to see if they've used the miracle drug on him, but they won't tell her.

So instead, she needs to stay by his side because that's what they do. She's been beside him the whole damn time and she's not going to stop now. The memory of those words make her eyes well up with tears and she uses her free hand to dab at them, feeling unwieldy and emotional, feeling so worn and knowing it's worth every second if it means Fitz stays alive.

The trouble with an infinite number of ever-changing doors and two people like Fitz and Simmons was that curiosity was going to persist. The first few trips, Simmons hadn't thought to bring any equipment, but this time she's scanning each area for a resonating signature that might indicate another universe. The dwarves are merrily off doing the same thing, but sometimes there's a human touch involved.

"Fitz," she says distractedly, turning in order to ask him about some of the readings. That's when she drops the console. It clatters on the ground and likely breaks a dozen expensive things, but nothing is processing in her mind except absolute fear. Down the hallway stands a face that she's only ever seen on television and in reports.

Loki, prince of Asgard and terrorizer of New York City.

"Fitz," Simmons ekes out, more frightened this time because the last time the world saw Loki, bad things happened and the Chitauri were among them and old fears crop up anew. What if he's carrying some trace amount of the virus? What if it's moved from its' current inert state? What happens if she has to find another cure? "We..." The words are swallowed up and she settles for tugging on his shirt.

Jemma Simmons. Biochem.
ABOUT
She didn't take the usual path most people expected. To be fair, though, most people aren't going through their education as quickly as Jemma's gone through hers. When she met Fitz at the Academy, everything started to make sense as she found another half to her whole and all the science that was out there and undiscovered quickly moved to within her reach. Between the two of them, they could conquer the world or maybe just a few departments in S.H.I.E.L.D.

CHARACTER NAME: Jemma Simmons
CHARACTER CANON: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

[OOC]

Slowtagging: Go for it!
Canon-puncturing: She might be slightly wary of how the physics of that work, but I don't mind if you puncture her.
Offensive subjects: Don't talk poorly about her team, though mentioning Grant Ward is liable to get you a punch in the face if not worse.

[IC]

Hugging this character: Yes!
Kissing this character: She'd be a bit shocked, but absolutely.
Flirting with this character: She might not recognize it, but yes.
Fighting with this character: Verbal fighting will be countermanded with more. She's become hardened over the last little while, so she's up for a fight but would still prefer to incapacitate rather than anything else.
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): Injure her as thoroughly as intended.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Yes.

General Warnings: Simmons is currently from roughly mid S2 of AOS and will eventually be updated to catch up with canon.
